Tomorrow’s Purpose Highlights Dallas Political Leaders and Young Authors

By: Keeshala Henderson

Carolyn Barnes, executive director of Tomorrow’s Purpose Youth Literacy Organization, hosted the dynamic annual “Reflection of Our Petals” event on July 27, 2024, at Eastfield College, featuring prominent African American women who are exceptional judges and key leaders in the political arena and Dallas County judicial system. The Honorable Kim Cooks, Honorable Raquel “Rocky” Jones, Honorable Shequitta Kelly, Honorable Valencia Nash and Texas State Representative Toni Rose imparted inspirational stories of overcoming personal and social obstacles, captivating the audience with invaluable insights.

Tomorrow’s Purpose is a locally based non-profit organization developed to teach socially and economically disadvantaged youth (ages 7 to 15) how to convert literacy into self-published books to link literacy to educational equity and an entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to the Youth Literacy Summer Camp, the “Reflections of Our Petals” program is a vital aspect of the organization created to restore mentoring hierarchy and the relationship of mothers and daughters. This year’s theme surrounding prominent judicial and political leaders derived from the desire to “highlight diverse backgrounds, perspectives and how diverse voices can contribute significantly to societal progress.”

Carolyn enthusiastically stated, “Seeing successful African American women in high-profile roles provides a tangible example of what’s possible. It breaks down stereotypes and shows young girls that they too can achieve greatness, no matter their background. They also stand as role models for our young girls by demonstrating the hard work, dedication and perseverance needed to succeed. Their stories can inspire young girls to pursue their own ambitions with confidence and determination. Representation helps to empower young girls by affirming their place in society. These leaders often broke barriers and overcame significant obstacles to reach their positions. Their presence and speeches can help demystify the path to success and encourage young girls to overcome their own challenges. When they see individuals who look like them in influential positions, it reinforces their sense of belonging and potential. Hearing firsthand experiences and insights from these professionals can provide valuable lessons about the legal system, governance and civic engagement. It’s an opportunity for education beyond textbooks and classrooms.”

Congratulations! “Reflection of Our Petals” commended the latest phenomenal, published authors to complete the Youth Literacy Camp! Faith Webb, author of Hugs & Hope A Guide To Cope, and Kurranie Holmes, author of Embrace Your Crown, were each presented with a Certificate of Completion from Texas House Representative Carl Sherman. Also, honored with distinguished awards from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, were 15-year-old Jeremiah Thomas, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Gold Medal Award for 100 volunteer hours and Mrs. Mary Phillips, recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for over 4,000 volunteer hours.
