PAMELA LOWERY HOSTS THE TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF BLACK FEMALE PHYSICIANS HEALTH FAIR & SCHOLARSHIP GALA

Southern Dallas Magazine Exclusive

Pamela Lowery is the Founder and CEO of Texas Association of Black Female Physicians. She recently held their health fair and scholarship gala. We had the opportunity to speak with the uber busy Ms. Lowery to hear more about her organization and the gala.

SDM – First off, I don’t believe you are a native of Dallas. What brought you to the Lone Star State? Tell us a little about yourself.
Pamela – You’re right—I’m originally from Columbus, Ohio! I moved to Dallas because of a professional opportunity in 2016 that really aligned with my personal aspirations. It was an exciting chance to grow in my career, and Dallas is such a vibrant city for business, marketing & multimedia, and yes healthcare, which made it an ideal fit for me.
I’ve spent many years working in business and over the course of my career, I’ve developed a deep passion for storytelling and connecting with people through those mediums. The chance to relocate to Dallas was not just a professional move, but also a step forward in pursuing my personal and creative goals. Since moving here, I’ve really enjoyed the energy of the city, the people, and all the new opportunities that continue to unfold.

SDM – Pamela, your association is shining light on the hard work of Texas female physicians. Tell us why you started this organization and what you are hoping to accomplish?
Pamela – As a part of the Women Physicians for Equity Foundation, and with the support of amazing Black female physicians, Dr. Lisa Taylor-Kennedy MD, Dr. Quanita Crable, MD, Dr.Terilyn R. Scott-Winful, MD, Dr. Adeola Chukwumah PharmD, Dr. Alecia Nero, MD, Dr. Latosha Flowers, MD and Dr. Kanenechukwu Ubesie, M.D.
I started this affiliate with a deep sense of purpose—to support and uplift Texas Black female physicians, who are not only vital to the healthcare system but often face unique challenges in their professional and personal lives. These women are truly the backbone of our communities, and they take care of all of us. However, the barriers they face—pay inequality, discrimination, implicit bias, and other obstacles—are often compounded by the multiple roles they play as professionals, wives, mothers, and caregivers.
All women, regardless of their field, encounter challenges like pay disparity and barriers to entry at some point in their careers, but for Black female physicians, these challenges are even more pronounced. They not only have to navigate a healthcare system where they are underrepresented, but they also have to manage the added pressure of being subjected to implicit bias and overt discrimination in the workplace. Our association is here to acknowledge these struggles and provide support on both a professional and personal level.
We serve our members by offering resources that address their unique needs, from employment placement assistance to mental health support like therapy. We’re not just here for the physicians themselves, but for their families and communities as well. In addition to supporting our members on a personal level, we also reach out to the wider community through healthcare events, seminars, and outreach programs designed to educate, advocate, and create opportunities for growth.
Ultimately, our goal is to create a space where Black female physicians are seen, valued, and supported, not just as professionals, but as whole people. We want to amplify their voices, honor their contributions, and ensure they have the tools and resources they need to thrive in every aspect of their lives.

SDM – Recently in October, you held the Texas Association of Black Female Physicians Health Fair & Scholarship Gala. It was a great success! Tell us about the gala.
Pamela – The Texas Association of Black Female Physicians Health Fair & Scholarship Gala in October was an incredible success, and it truly highlighted the heart of our mission—supporting both the healthcare needs of the community and the next generation of Black healthcare professionals.
Our statewide health fair was amazing. We were able to serve the community with not only essential health resources, but also vital information. From free screenings to health education, we provided attendees with tools to take charge of their health, all while fostering a sense of connection and empowerment within the community. It was a chance for people to engage directly with healthcare professionals, ask questions, and get the care they might not have had access to otherwise.
The Scholarship Gala, which followed, was equally inspiring. We dedicated the evening to supporting emerging young Black healthcare professionals—especially those who are pursuing careers in medicine. The statistics are clear: currently, Black physicians make up less than 6% of the physician population in the United States. Simply put, we need more Black doctors, both male and female, to ensure that the medical field better reflects and serves our diverse communities. This is why our scholarship program is so important. We’re helping to put these young people through college and supporting them as they take the next steps toward becoming physicians, nurses, and other healthcare leaders.
We believe in investing in the future of medicine, and this event was a celebration of both the work we’re doing today and the promise of what’s to come. The support we received for this event was overwhelming, and we couldn’t be more excited about the impact it will have on both our community and the healthcare profession as a whole.

SDM – Any parting words of wisdom?

Pamela – As a people we’ve come too far, and have acquired too much to be failing in an open book test, so read your scripture daily. Business is essentially servitude, so serve others with a genuine heart. But most importantly, teach our children that there is more to life than just sports and entertainment, empower them to seek the world of healthcare in which they can impact the lives of millions around the world. To God be the glory.
