It was a weekend for the storybooks. History was made the weekend of December 16th and 17th of 2022. It all started Friday the 16th with South Oak Cliff Coach Jason Todd winning his second State Football Championship and doing it back-to-back, which has never been done in Dallas ISD history. Then Saturday the 17th, DeSoto won their first State Football Championship under Coach Claude Mathis, followed by Duncanville’s Coach Reginald Samples finally defeating Galena Park North Shore Mustangs after three losses to them. It was perhaps that win that was the sweetest of all three! Coach Samples has coached for 32 years with 326 career wins. SOC’s Coach Jason Todd had once been Coach Samples Assistant Coach at Skyline High School. So many people were rooting for him to win the big one and when he did it was nothing but pure joy. That weekend also produced for the first time two Black coaches winning a 6A Championship, that being DeSoto and Duncanville. It was a magical weekend and thousands attended AT&T Stadium to witness something that may never happen again anytime soon, perhaps. But who knows, with these coaches anything can happen. Congratulations once again South Oak Cliff Bears, DeSoto Eagles and Duncanville Panthers! You have made Southern Dallas and all of North Texas proud!
