Kappa Kamp Leadership Program: Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow

By: Keeshala Henderson

The Kappa Kamp Leadership Program, hosted at the illustrious Paul Quinn College, is an exemplary enrichment program focused on fostering leadership development, personal growth and educational enrichment for young men ages 12-16. Originally commencing in 1995 in Piney Woods, Mississippi under the visionary leadership of Chairman and Kappa Kamp Director Maurice A. West, the program has garnered nationwide exposure. Mr. West enthusiastically shared, “The Kappas just wanted to have a positive impact on young men and that was the catalyst. The two-week program hosts an average of 120 young men across the country.” The remarkable Kappa Kamp team are comprised of passionate and proficient professionals with diverse backgrounds and unique skillsets who are committed to the empowerment and development of young men.
College Readiness, Business, STEM, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy and Team Building are specific key program elements. The program aims to provide participants with the opportunity to acquire productive life skills through intensive workshops, learning through structured physical activities, enrichment camps and classes, and attendance to a variety of cultural and recreational activities, field trips and educational lectures. With extensive corporate and community partnerships, prominent speakers and generous supporters, Kappa Kamp concluded another highly impactful and successful 2024 program. “Kappa Kamp is an awesome opportunity for aspiring young men to gain lifelong skills, knowledge and new friendships. Experiencing the drone assignments with Google in Frisco and meeting inspirational new mentors like Mr. Nuro Witherspoon, were just a couple of exciting highlights,” Chase Shelby, a junior and second-year Kamper, fervently expressed. Hunter Garrett, a ninth grader and second-year Kamper, zealously stated, “My experience at Kappa Kamp was truly memorable and enriching. I made lifelong friends and learned valuable leadership skills. The activities were both challenging and fun, pushing me to grow in ways I had not expected. The supportive environment and inspiring mentors made every moment worthwhile.”
The business and STEM component incorporates a business plan challenge for Kamper teams to present to an esteemed panel of judges. The Kampers creatively rise to the occasion highlighting their business, collaborative, leadership and presentation skills! Congratulations again to Team 1911, which also happens to be the founding year of Kappa Alpha Psi®, formerly Kappa Alpha Nu! Through its worldwide prominence, Kappa Alpha Psi® has had a global and local impact in communities. Mr. West shared his future vision for the Kappa Kamp program is “to continue to grow and become even more impactful.”
Thank you, Kappa Kamp Team, for your commitment and consistency in developing and encouraging our young men!
