This month, we shine the spotlight on Chief Christopher Shaw, affectionately known as “Chris.” As the Chief of Police at the UNT Dallas Police Department, Chris has made history as the first African American Chief of UNT Dallas and one of the founding members of the department, which was established in 2012. Since stepping into this role in 2018, Chris has led with vision, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
Under his leadership, UNT Dallas has been recognized as one of the safest universities in the country, maintaining exceptionally low crime rates year after year. This achievement reflects not only the dedication of the department but also Chris’s strategic approach to campus security. His efforts extend beyond the main campus to include the UNT Dallas College of Law in Downtown Dallas, ensuring that every student, faculty member, and staff member feels secure.
Chris’s impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he earned a prestigious spot among the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) “40 Under 40” awardees, a global recognition reserved for law enforcement professionals who demonstrate leadership, commitment, and community impact. This honor speaks volumes about his influence and the respect he commands within the law enforcement community.
Former UNT Dallas President Bob Mong summed it up best:
“Chief Shaw is not only widely respected and well-liked by his fellow officers and UNT Dallas faculty, staff and students, but also his peers and community members.”
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chris is a man of faith and family. He is married to Judge Vonda Bailey, and together they have two wonderful children. A proud Dallas native, Chris graduated from David W. Carter High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff and a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of North Texas. He is also an outdoorsman who enjoys hunting and fishing—a city man with a love for the country. Those who know him well will tell you that behind his strong exterior is a quick wit and a contagious laugh.
Chris’s commitment to excellence is evident in his professional development. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (281st class) and the LEMIT Leadership Command College (LCC) class of 102, two of the most respected leadership programs in law enforcement. These credentials underscore his dedication to growth and his belief in preparing his team for success. Chief Shaw actively opens doors for his officers, ensuring they have opportunities for advancement and the tools to thrive in their careers.
With Chief Shaw at the helm, UNT Dallas is not only safe—it is in exceptional hands. His leadership, vision, and heart for the community make him a true asset to the university and a role model for law enforcement professionals everywhere.
