Music is Unity: Gospel and Hip Hop Meets Classical Erica Campbell, Spinderella and more to perform with Dallas Symphony Orchestra

By Toska Medlock Lee

It is often said that Music is the universal language that brings people together. From Blues, Soul, Rock, Country, Christian, Gospel or Hip Hop – it is the rhythm in music that researchers say syncs up our brains and coordinate our body movements. The groove it creates can unify a group like in the popular line dances we’ve come to love, from ‘the wobble’ to ‘cotton eyed joe’ or the ‘cowboy cha cha.’ These movements create unity through music and dance.

On Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 pm thousands will test this theory during a musical experience with The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and Project Unity. The annual Together We Sing, a soul-stirring evening where Gospel and Hip Hop Meets classical, will take center stage with GRAMMY® Award-Winner Erica Campbell and Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient SPINDERELLA, BET Sundays Best Finalist Zebulon Ellis, National Recording Artists Gaye Arbuckle, Angela Blair-Jeffries, Tatiana Barnett, Hollywood famed orchestrator and conductor Leon Lacey, a 200-voice multi-faith choir, and more will unite the community through music.

“We are very excited for our ongoing partnership with the DSO and to have the opportunity to bring performers and audience members of all backgrounds together to promote unity,” said Richie Butler, Founder of Project Unity. “I can’t think of a better way to move forward in our mission of togetherness than through music.”

“The collaboration between Project Unity and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra is a beautiful harmony of community and music,” said Kim Noltemy, President & CEO of the DSO. “We are proud to work together, welcoming audiences of all backgrounds to experience the power of music to strengthen unity.”

In its third year, Together We Sing will take place at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas and will lead into the week of Juneteenth, a national holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The five-star event experience will include red carpet, reception, digital museum, and will celebrate National Black Music Month with a special tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop, an unusual but exciting genre of music to blend with the orchestra.

The annual Together We Awards will return with a special awards presentation honoring NFL Executive Vice President of Operations Troy Vincent for his work in strengthening the diversity, equity and inclusion commitment of every team in the NFL. Project Unity has developed this honor to recognize champions who are working tirelessly to create new paths to confront and dismantle racism. Honorees will be celebrated during the Together We Awards reception presented at the concert.

Together We Sing has become the mantra and signature event for Project Unity, the Dallas-based organization uses the theme “Together We” to bring people together to tackle our differences with innovative events. Through sports, dinner and music, Project Unity uses everyday occurrences to build collaborative ways to unite.

Together We Sing will benefit Project Unity and its collaborative programming and events hosted in partnership with segments of the Dallas community, including faith, business, civic, philanthropic, grassroots and government entities. Project Unity and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra have collaborated in multiple events, including Gospel Goes Classical in 2019, Together We Sing in 2022 and a Unity Concert presented at the Meyerson Symphony Center in 2020 that honored those who lost their lives to racial violence and injustice.

Tickets for the performance start at $49 and are available now at dallassymphony.org or projectunity.netHave a group of 10 or more? Contact the DSO at 214-981-2974 for group sales and discount information.
